2020 was a crazy year on many levels. With the pandemic, the Black Lives Matter Movement, and the election, it was truly one of the hardest years for many people. However, one of the positives that came out of 2020 was that these political movements helped consumers become more mindful about the brands they’re supporting, and what they stand for. The Black Lives Matter movement showed me that we need to be supporting Black–owned businesses and really put our money where our mouth is.
Not only have Black-owned businesses historically had a harder time accessing loans and capital, but they’ve also also been disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Melissa Goldberg, Oprah Magazine
So today, I’m putting together a list of Black-owned businesses that you should support in 2021. If you can, I recommend purchasing these products directly from the companies’ websites vs a retailer so that the companies can keep as much of the profit as possible (vs. having to give up ~50% margin for most retailers).
* Will indicate the brands that I have personally tried, and I’ll share my favorites from those brands. I’ve only tried a few of them, but I do hope to be able to support all of the brands on this list eventually!
Beauty
Briogeo*
Looking to step up your hair care game? Briogeo is a hair care line focused on providing high quality, effective products that are formulated without SLS/SLES and silicones. Their founder, Nancy Twine, noticed a gap in the industry for high-performance products that are formulated with natural botanicals to help hydrate and protect your hair.
Two of my favorites are the Scalp Revival Micro-Exfoliating Shampoo and the Farewell Frizz Rosarco Milk Leave-In Conditioner.
Organic Bath Co.
Anyone else trying to up their body care game in 2021? Organic Bath Co. is a unisex bath & body line that believes that self-care should be simple. Husband-Wife duo Jay Weeks and Gianne Doherty founded Organic Bath Co. after Gianne struggled with a bad reaction from conventional beauty products. Their bestsellers are their body butters, and they also carry hand soaps, bar soaps, hand sanitizer, and more!

The Lip Bar
Believe it or not, this brand got rejected on Shark Tank. Founder Melissa Butler didn’t let that roadblock stop her from bringing The Lip Bar to fruition. The Lip Bar is a vegan and cruelty-free beauty brand that wants to redefine beauty standards. The brand started with just lip products, and quickly expanded to complexion and eye products with the launch of their Fast Face Kits.
Topicals*
Topicals was founded by two BIPOC, Olamide and Claudia, who were inspired by normalizing “real skin”. They currently carry two products: Faded, a brightening & clearing gel, and Like Butter, a deeply hydrating mask. Topicals formulates with a scientific advisory board to create effective, science-backed formulas for all skin types.
I am currently testing out both products and have really been enjoying them so far! I will update with a full review after a few weeks of use – so stay tuned π
