Updated in April 2026 to add images with updated packaging, pricing changes, provide updated reviews, and add in reviews for the newer sunscreens in the line.
If you’ve been around my Instagram or blog for awhile, you know I’m huge on sunscreen. It protects your skin from skin cancer, uv rays, sun damage, and more. Having good sun protection is crucial to prevent premature aging and fine lines. If there are any skincare products you should be adding to your routine, sunscreen is it.
I came across the Drmtlgy sunscreen line on Instagram, and decided to pick them up to try. I’m always on the lookout for a good sunscreen, and these seemed high quality for a fair price. They’re “subtly” marketed as comparable to the EltaMD UV Clear sunscreens. I’ve tried the tinted Elta MD and spoiler alert: I prefer the one from Drmtlgy.
Drmtlgy has four versions of their sunscreen: Broad Spectrum SPF 45 (untinted), Universal Tinted Moisturizer SPF 46, Matte Tinted Moisturizer SPF 46, and Physical Tinted Moisturizer SPF44 (Note: shopping through my affiliate links or using my code E55H5 will give you 20% off your purchase!). I’ve tried all four sunscreens and have recommended them to lots of my friends and patients. Many of them love them as much as I do! Let’s dive into my review of the Drmtlgy sunscreens and which ones I prefer!
Drmtlgy Sunscreen Review
Today I’ll be sharing my honest thoughts on all of these sunscreens, and some things to note before purchasing.
Most of these are “hybrid” sunscreens, meaning they use a mix of chemical and physical filters (octinoxate and zinc oxide). For context, a lot of physical sunscreens tend to be thicker or chalkier and can leave a white cast. Chemical sunscreens are typically more cosmetically elegant. However, chemical sunscreen ingredients like oxybenzone can be irritating for sensitive skin. Hybrid sunscreens are a great option for a more cosmetically elegant formula that can be suitable for sensitive skin.
Drmtlgy did come out with a physical-only tinted sunscreen that uses only physical sunscreen filters (zinc oxide and titanium dioxide), which I’ll be reviewing as well
In terms of what I look for and recommend for sunscreens: broad spectrum SPF 30+ for every day. All of these sunscreens provide broad spectrum protection (meaning they protect from UVA rays and UVB rays) and have high SPF’s over 40.
Drmtlgy Tinted Sunscreen Review
Drmtlgy has three different tinted sunscreens, their original Universal Tinted Moisturizer SPF 46, Matte Tinted Moisturizer SPF 46, and the Physical Tinted Moisturizer SPF 44. What I love about tinted sunscreens is that they have iron oxides (the pigment that gives them the tint), which help to protect your skin from blue light from the sun. This makes them a great option for those prone to hyperpigmentation and dark spots because blue light can worsen these skin conditions. I personally always reach for tinted sunscreens when I know I’ll be spending time outside to give my skin the proper protection.
Let’s dive into the differences between these three tinted sunscreen options:
Drmtlgy Sunscreen: Tinted Moisturizer SPF 46

This is my holy grail sunscreen! This tinted SPF is lightweight, blends in beautifully, and gives your skin the most amazing glow. This formula is lightweight and sinks into the skin without feeling heavy or greasy. I use 3 full pumps of this sunscreen for proper protection, and it leaves my skin with a natural glow.
This tinted sunscreen has a sheer tint that is a great fit for my light/medium skin tone. I’ve also seen demonstrations of this sunscreen on a darker skin tone on their Instagram. It’s advertised as a “universal tint”, but I’m not sure if it’d work for very deep or fair skin tones. It’s important to note that a lot of brands formulate sunscreens with a tint to minimize the white cast rather than to provide coverage.
I personally love using tinted sunscreens in place of foundation or bb cream, but it won’t really cover any dark spots or discoloration. It just gives the skin a nice natural glow. It also layers really well under makeup without pilling. I’ve gone through 2 bottles and it will be a forever repurchase for me!

Drmtlgy Matte Tinted Moisturizer SPF 46
The Matte version of Drmtlgy’s tinted sunscreen is the newest one in the lineup. The original tinted sunscreen formula definitely has a glowy finish, but this matte version definitely has a mattified finish. The formula of this sunscreen compared to the original tinted sunscreen is pretty comparable, with a pretty lightweight, moisturizing texture that blends in easily. The only difference I find between the two formulas is the finish.
I find that this Matte version is a little bit more wearable and less glowy. I really appreciate that Drmtlgy came out with this second version because I think it’s a better fit for those with combination or oily skin that tend to get shiny throughout the day. When I first recommended the original universal tinted sunscreen, my clients with oily skin mentioned they didn’t love the glowy finish – so this is a great option for those who prefer a more matte look.
I’ll definitely be using the matte version in the warmer months and reach for the original formula when I’m looking for more of a glowy look.

Physical Tinted Moisturizer SPF 44
The Physical Tinted Moisturizer is the only mineral/physical sunscreen in this sunscreen line. I tried this formula from Drmtlgy a year or two ago, so I unfortunately don’t have it to photograph, but it’s honestly my least favorite sunscreen that they offer. The fully physical formula is thicker than the others, and the tint is much more pigmented, making it hard to work for a variety of skin tones. I personally found that this sunscreen ran a little too light for me with fair/light skin, so it definitely wouldn’t work on medium to deep skin tones.
I will say, I do think most physical sunscreens tend to be thicker and harder to blend, so this isn’t unique to this specific sunscreen, but it’s definitely not my pick. The other tinted sunscreens have a sheer tint that would work for a wider range of skin tones, but this one is definitely thicker and harder to blend in. The positive of having a more pigmented formula is that it does provide more coverage than the other tinted options, so if this tint works for your skin tone, it could be a good option for someone looking for a higher coverage product.
It’s not the worst mineral/physical sunscreen I’ve tried; it doesn’t feel too heavy on the skin and it sets to a natural finish. I wish that this formula was a little more forgiving and worked for more skin tones, but it honestly isn’t one that I recommend often because it realistically isn’t going to work for most skin tones. I’d definitely recommend any of the other sunscreens instead.

Broad Spectrum SPF 45

This untinted sunscreen from Drmtlgy has a creamy texture that blends in nicely into the skin. Its moisturizing formula can leave the skin slightly tacky right after application, but it sinks in well and feels comfortable on the skin after a few minutes.
It has a natural finish, not too shiny or matte, and would be a great option for dry skin types. This could work for combination or oily skin as well, but you may want to try skipping moisturizer and using this as your moisturizer + SPF in one since it’s a more nourishing formula.
I personally don’t experience a white cast with this sunscreen after it sinks in, but I am quite fair/light. There may be a slight cast on darker skin tones, but the hybrid formula should help minimize some of the white cast (vs. using a 100% mineral sunscreen). It has a slight sunscreen smell on first application, but I find that it fades after a few minutes. Just something to note as scent can be very personal.
This formula also layers very well under makeup and doesn’t feel greasy on the skin. It’s a really nice, solid option that fits perfectly into a skin care routine. I personally prefer the tinted sunscreens because they provide blue light protection with the iron oxides, plus the formula is a little more lightweight, but this is a solid option for an untinted sunscreen. It’s a great option if you’re looking for an everyday sunscreen with a high SPF!

Overall Thoughts
Overall, I’m a big fan of most of these Drmtlgy sunscreens and I think they’re a well-priced, high quality line of sunscreens! If you have trouble finding a sunscreen that works well for you, I highly recommend these. They’re a great option for acne prone skin and sensitive skin types. The pricing is a little high, but you can get 20% off with my code and they often run sales! You can also opt into a subscription and save 25% on each bottle.
I do find the packaging to be a bit bulky and I hate the “medical grade” marketing ploy, but those are the only downsides for me. I am so glad to have discovered these, and they have quickly become my go-to sunscreens!
